The 2024 Autumn Budget announcements provide a closer look at the future of education capital spending, highlighting both promising developments and ongoing challenges.

The government’s commitment to increase overall capital investment in education by 19% next year is a welcome step, with £6.7 billion allocated to support schools and further education.

While these allocations are encouraging, they only begin to address the scale of challenges faced by the education sector. Over 38% of the school estate is beyond its intended design life, requiring substantial investment to modernise and ensure safety. Additionally, capital funding for decarbonisation remains underfunded, leaving questions about how schools will meet public sector emission reduction targets by 2037.
