CIF appeals – why a fresh application can help
The successful schools in the latest round of Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) have just been announced – and inevitably some academies and Multi-Academy Trusts will have been disappointed not to be awarded funding.
But while it might be tempting to appeal against the decision, that may not always be the best move.
Appeals have to be lodged by 7 June 2022 so a swift decision is needed.
In our considered view – based on many years of advising schools on how best they can secure funding, and our 85% CIF success rate – a fresh application is usually a better option.
In the latest 2022-2023 round, funding of £498 million has been allocated for 1,405 projects at 1,129 academies, sixth-form colleges and voluntary aided schools.
Improving pupil outcomes
If you have missed out it may be a heavy blow to your plans to improve your estate for a better teaching environment and pupil outcomes.
Appeals, however, are only allowed for applicants who can demonstrate that a material error has been made in the assessment of their application.
No new evidence can therefore be submitted.
Moreover, the appeals process takes months and in the vast majority of cases appeals are overturned.
Submit a new application
That time could be better spent on preparing to submit a new application for the next round of CIF allocations for 2023-2024.
Surveyors to Education can advise on how to make the best evidenced case for projects to keep your school buildings safe and in good working order.
Only around a third of CIF applications are accepted each year – but our success rate for clients is an outstanding 85%.
Most CIF funding addresses issues with poor condition, building compliance, energy efficiency or health and safety, with the highest priority going to projects that address structural safety, fire protection systems, gas safety, electrical safety or emergency asbestos removal.
Professional support
The regulations around CIF funding are complex, however, and making an application can be a daunting process. For the best chance of success it is therefore advisable to seek professional support.
